A Slumping Roger Maris Won't Talk to Press

Sept. 15, 1961 - Roger Maris went to bat nine times in the doubleheader against the Tigers today, which ended in a split decision. Only a single in his last time up saved Maris from a hitless day. How does the slugger feel that he is now even with Babe Ruth's 1927 pace? He wouldn't say. In fact, Maris was completely silent. A club spokesman said Roger had told him that, from now on, he was going to stay in the trainer's quarters until the press departed. According to the spokesman, Maris's reason was that he was "being ripped by writers in every city."
