Jan. 1, 1962 - Van Johnson (pictured) collapsed on stage today when the tip of one of his fingers was cut off during a performance of “The Music Man” at London’s Adelphi Theatre. The stage and screen star was making his entrance from a train carriage when the door swung back on his hand. A tourniquet was applied to the finger in his dressing room before he was rushed off to a hospital by taxi. An understudy took over Mr. Johnson’s role and the show went ahead after a short delay. A hospital spokesman said the actor was “comfortable.”
