Actress Sylvia Sidney Files Lawsuit Against NBC

Nov. 28, 1961 - Sylvia Sidney (pictured in 1934), the Broadway and Hollywood actress, sued for $350,000 damages today on the complaint that she had been “demoted” by NBC to the status of the leader of a harmonica band. In a Superior Court suit against the network, Miss Sidney charged that in advertising a Bobby Darin show televised last Jan. 31, NBC made reference to her as the leader of an “all-mother” harmonica band and said she would appear on the show. The actress complained that the reference implied she no longer was young enough to play leading roles and gave listeners the impression that she had become something less than an actress. Her petition charged defamation, invasion of privacy, and misappropriation of her name for commercial purposes.
