AFL Football: New York Titans Drill in Record Heat

July 24, 1961 - Slinging Sammy Baugh, head coach of the New York Titans, took one look at the thermometer this morning, whistled, and sent his squad of 65 Titans out for their first contract drill. The temperature was in the 90's and the humidity extremely high. When the workout was over, the perspiring squad trooped into the dressing room as if it had just come in from a swim. After today's workout, John Martin, the team's host at the Bear Mountain Inn, ordered his chef to serve prime ribs of beef tonight. He has increased his earlier estimates and now predicts that the players probably will consume 70 tons of beef by the time they break camp Sept. 8.
