Jan. 2, 1963 - Al Kaline became the highest paid Detroit Tiger today when he signed for an estimated $52,000. The right fielder’s contract surpasses the one for $50,000 given to Rocky Colavito last season. It was Kaline’s 11th contract with Detroit since signing with the Tigers as a $35,000 bonus player in 1953. Kaline missed 57 games last year after breaking his collarbone on May 26, but he hit .306 and slugged 28 homers. “My arm feels as good as ever. In fact, it might be stronger because I worked so hard to get it back in shape,” said Kaline today.
