Art Carney Arrested on Drunk Driving Charge

Nov. 8, 1962 - Art Carney, the stage and television actor, was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated today after his sports car smashed into the rear of a taxicab. No one was injured. The accident occurred at Broadway and 70th Street shortly after noon. The police said the car driven by Mr. Carney struck the rear of a taxi driven by Edward Cherry, 31, who had stopped for a traffic light. At the police station, Mr. Carney, who is 44 and lives in Bronxville, N.Y., refused to take an intoxication test. He was booked and held for an appearance in night court. A spokesman at the Biltmore Theater, where Mr. Carney is starring in “Take Her, She’s Mine,” said Donald Woods, Mr. Carney’s regular stand-in, would take his place in tonight’s performance.
