‘Bama Routs Mississippi State as QB Namath Shines

Nov. 3, 1962 - Quarterback Joe Namath (#12) today passed and ran second-ranked Alabama to its 18th consecutive victory. The Crimson Tide routed Mississippi State, 20-0. Namath threw two touchdown passes to an end, Bill Battle. His accurate tossing and hard running accounted for most of the Alabama yardage. He completed 12 of 19 passes for 150 yards and carried the ball a dozen times for 69 yards. Some 26,000 fans watched on a cloudy and chilly homecoming afternoon in Starkville, Miss., as Alabama continued its campaign to repeat as national champion. Alabama’s unbeaten streak was increased to 25 games by the triumph. The only blotch on the record was a 3-3 tie in the 1961 Bluebonnet Bowl.
