May 25, 1963 - Bo Belinsky (pictured) was optioned to Hawaii of the Pacific Coast League today by the Los Angeles Angels. The flashy left-handed pitcher, who had a 1-7 record, is subject to 24-hour recall. Manager Bill Rigney said, “As soon as this left-hander plays the way he can, he’ll be back with our club.” Belinsky, 26, pitched a no-hitter when he beat the Orioles, 2-0, in Los Angeles last season. This year, he made 9 starts and had a 6.39 earned run average. His only victory and complete game was against the Yankees on May 1. He won, 5-3, and struck out 9 batters. Belinsky, who made headlines this year by announcing his engagement to actress Mamie Van Doren, said today, “Well, at least Hawaii is a great place to go.” Later, however, he complained about not getting run support from his Angel teammates this season. “I started nine games for them,” he said, “and they got me one run or less in all but one of them.” Belinsky’s celebrated fiancée offered her opinion that the change would do Belinsky good. “Hawaii is one of my favorite spots,” added Miss Van Doren.
