Ben Scotti Released by Philadelphia Eagles after Fight with John Mellekas

Nov. 26, 1963 - Ben Scotti (pictured) is no longer a Philadelphia Eagle. The Eagles asked waivers today on Scotti and reinstated John Mellekas after fining him $500. Coach Nick Skorich said he and general manager Vince McNally reached this decision after a review of all the facts in Saturday night’s fight involving Scotti and Mellekas. Following the fight, which took place after a team meeting, both men had been suspended without pay. Scotti, a defensive back, suffered a broken right hand. Mellekas, a tackle, was severely beaten about the face. Both men were hospitalized. It was reported their fight was over whether the Eagles’ game Sunday against the Washington Redskins should be played in view of the assassination of President Kennedy. The game was played, and Philadelphia lost, 13-10.
