Sept. 21, 1963 - Taking the top spot today on the Billboard Hot 100 is “Blue Velvet,” a recording by Bobby Vinton (pictured). The song was composed in 1950 by Bernie Wayne and Lee Morris and was previously a Top 20 hit for Tony Bennett in its original 1951 version. Wayne was inspired to write “Blue Velvet” on a visit to Richmond, Virginia, where he stayed at the Jefferson Hotel. At a hotel party, he continually caught sight of a female guest dressed in blue velvet with whom he would have a holiday romance. On the new Bobby Vinton recording, the singer is backed by Burt Bacharach and his Orchestra.
