Bills Change Minds on Gilchrist Firing

Nov. 18, 1964 - The Buffalo Bills changed their minds and pulled Cookie Gilchrist off the American Football League waiver list today after the Oakland Raiders had put in a claim for him.

Coach Lou Saban met with Gilchrist at the Bills’ office, and the controversial fullback apologized for incidents that led to his discharge yesterday

In his filmed apology, Gilchrist said: “In the past, I have said and done many things for which I am truly ashamed. I have criticized my teammates and my coaching staff — unjustly. I am sorry.”
It was also reported that Gilchrist, the league’s top ground-gainer, apologized to his teammates earlier today.

Gilchrist, the 1962 AFL player of the year, appeared headed for Oakland for the $100 waiver price when the Bills recalled him.

Oakland, New York, and Boston had put in claims for his services, but the Raiders had the inside track because of their poorer record.
