June 9, 1964 - The Boston Bruins engineered another NHL trade today, obtaining Murray Balfour, a wing, from the Chicago Black Hawks in exchange for Jerry Toppazzini (pictured in 1958).
Included in the trade were farmhands of both clubs.
Boston acquired Mike Draper, 20 years old, who plays both defense and forward, and Chicago got the rights to Matt Ravlich, 26, a defenseman. Draper played with St. Louis of the Central League last year, and Ravlich divided his time between the Bruins and the Providence Reds of the American League.
The Boston club also obtained James Mikol, a wing, who was Toronto property, and Jean Gravel, property of Montreal, in the draft.
Balfour, 28, a right wing who was a member of the Hawks’ Stanley Cup champions in 1960 and 1961, was sidelined for 29 games last year with a groin injury. He returned in time to score two winning goals for the Hawks in their losing semifinal series in the playoffs last season.
“We’re sorry to part with Balfour,” said Tommy Ivan, Hawks’ general manager, “but we hope to strengthen our reserves with the players from Boston.”
Toppazzini, 33, has been in the NHL 12 years, 8½ of them with the Bruins. He has been with Chicago before, going there in a trade in the 1953-54 season, and returning to Boston in the 1955-56 season.
Yesterday, the Bruins sent 31-year-old Doug Mohns to the Hawks in exchange for Ab McDonald and Reg Fleming, forwards.
