Brazilian President Bans Bathing Suits in Beauty Contests as Part of "Moralizing" Campaign

Aug. 11, 1961 - President Janio Quadros (pictured with broom) banned bathing suits today in all Brazilian beauty contests. The decree said short skirts would be "tolerated." The President acted on a plea from the League of Catholic Women. In six months in office, President Quadros, whose declared aim is "moralizing" Brazil, has prohibited cockfights altogether and horseraces on working days. He is believed to be considering a ban on traditional firecrackers.
