Broncos Upset Chargers as Tripucka Shines at QB

Sept. 7, 1962 - Frank Tripucka (#18) treated the largest crowd in Denver’s professional football history to a dazzling passing display today as the Denver Broncos upset the San Diego Chargers, 30-21, in the first game of the 1962 American Football League season. A standing-room-only crowd of 28,000 saw the Broncos’ offensive unit take charge early and go on to defeat the Western Division champions. Denver had wound up the 1961 season by losing its last seven games. Tripucka, in his 14th year as a pro, completed 20 of 33 passes for 252 yards in the first half as the Broncos rolled up a 24-7 lead. Gene Mingo, a halfback, scored all of Denver’s points in the second half on field goals of 41 and 53 yards.
