Browns’ Halfback Called to Service with Mississippi National Guard

Sept. 30, 1962 - Bobby Franklin (left), a 25-year-old defensive halfback with the Cleveland Browns of the NFL, was ordered today to report for duty with the Mississippi National Guard, which was federalized by President Kennedy in response to the desegregation crisis at the University of Mississippi at Oxford. Franklin, a former University of Mississippi star, is in his third year of pro football. Ed Khayat, a reserve defensive tackle with the Washington Redskins, was also called to duty with the Guard. Khayat was handed a telegram in the dressing room after the Redskins’ victory over the St. Louis Cardinals today. He was ordered to report immediately.
