Cappelletti Outscores entire Broncos Team as Patriots Win in Boston

Oct. 18, 1963 - Gino Cappelletti, the American Football League scoring leader, went on a 22-point spree tonight to personally outscore the entire Denver Broncos team in the Patriots’ 40-21 victory in Boston. Cappelletti, who won the league scoring crown two years ago and was runner-up last season, kicked four field goals, scored a touchdown on a 24-yard pass, and converted after all four Patriot touchdowns. Cappelletti went into the game with 47 points and a 9-point lead in the league scoring race. His 22 points gave him 69 in seven games. The Broncos managed to stay in the game before 25,418 at Fenway Park with a quarterback who had practiced with them only twice. Don Breaux, picked up from San Diego’s taxi squad earlier in the week, was rushed into action when Mickey Slaughter suffered a possible concussion in a second-quarter collision with four Boston linemen. Breaux, who played without relief after Slaughter was hurt, connected on a two-yard touchdown pass to Bob Scarpitto. His passing several times carried the Broncos on fruitless drives into Boston territory.
