Mar. 12, 1963 - Unbeaten Cassius Clay and Doug Jones finished training yesterday for their heavyweight fight tomorrow night with all 18,000 seats in Madison Square Garden sold out. The sellout was the first ever achieved before the day of the fight in the arena’s 38-year history. In addition, 700 standing room tickets at $4 each were almost gone. Harry Markson, managing director, said the total gate should approximate $115,000. Broadway ticket scalpers were asking from $50 to $100 for ringside tickets. One spectator remarked: “I wouldn’t be surprised if a good pair gets $250 by fight time.” A press corps numbering 200, the largest in Garden history, will be present at the fight. Clay is expected to scale 206 to Jones’s 185 pounds. Clay gained nationwide attention when he knocked out former light-heavyweight champion Archie Moore last Nov. 15 in the fourth round, as he had predicted.
