Castro Approves of U.S. Federal Action in Mississippi

Oct. 2, 1962 - Premier Fidel Castro (pictured with Black Muslim spokesman Malcolm X in 1960) voiced his approval today of the United States Government’s dispatch of troops to secure the enrollment of a Negro, James H. Meredith, at the University of Mississippi. Premier Castro declared that “racists who oppose entrance of that youth to the university” also were clamoring for United States forces to invade Cuba. Commenting on the dispatch of U.S. troops to the University of Mississippi, he said: “We understand that it is a correct act.” The Premier spoke at a meeting of the Cuban Women’s Federation, the female arm of his Communist-aimed revolution.
