Oct. 30, 1961 - Howard K. Smith (pictured center last year) and CBS announced today that their relations had been terminated “because of a difference in interpretation of CBS news policy.” The news commentator had been with the network for 20 years. Mr. Smith is known to favor the right not only to report news but to offer an interpretation of major issues. It is understood that CBS believes he has shown a tendency to go beyond pure interpretation into the area of editorialization. The commentator has refuted this. This basic difference in attitude led to the break between Mr. Smith and the network. Mr. Smith joined CBS in 1941 as Berlin correspondent.
