Chamber Music at the White House

Nov. 13, 1961 - Cellist Pablo Casals, violinist Alexander Schneider, and pianist Mieczyslaw Horszowski played the chamber music of Mendelssohn, Schumann, and Couperin before a distinguished audience at the White House this evening. The concert, played in the East Room, followed a state dinner given by President and Mrs. Kennedy for Gov. Luis Munoz Marin of Puerto Rico. At the onset of the concert, President Kennedy introduced the three musicians and spoke briefly about art as “an integral part of free society.” When the concert was over, Mr. Casals, 84 years old, and President Kennedy embraced each other. Mr. Casals last appeared at the White House in 1904 during the Administration of Theodore Roosevelt.
