Clemente Signs '62 Contract with Pirates for $50,000

Feb. 5, 1962 - Roberto Clemente (left), the National League batting champion, today signed his 1962 contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates. His salary was estimated at $50,000. “We reached an agreement with no trouble,” said Joe L. Brown (right), the Pirate general manager. “Obviously, Roberto felt it was a fair offer because he signed readily.” Clemente had a batting average of .351 last season and replaced a teammate, Dick Groat, as the National League’s top hitter. Clemente was honored last night by the Dapper Dan Club, a charitable sports organization. He received the Dapper Dan Award as the athlete who did most to publicize the city of Pittsburgh last year.
