Comedian Jonathan Winters to Star on One-Hour NBC Special

Aug. 26, 1963 - Jonathan Winters (right with Jack Paar), the 37-year-old comedian, will star on a one-hour show over NBC-TV on Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. It is expected to be the first of four special shows, all starring Mr. Winters, to be sponsored on various networks by Scripto, Inc., and the Elgin Watch Company. Winters has long been a favorite of Jack Paar, who hosted the “Tonight” show from 1957 until last year. Winters, who has a genius for mimicry, appeared frequently on the show and once impersonated President Kennedy over the telephone as a prank on Paar. In 1961, he played a dramatic role in “A Game of Pool,” an episode of “The Twilight Zone.” Winters, who joined the U.S Marine Corps at the age of 17 and served 2½ years in the Pacific Theater during WWII, has suffered nervous breakdowns and spent eight months in a private psychiatric hospital in 1959 and again in 1961.
