Comedian Lenny Bruce Convicted of Heroin Possession

May 16, 1963 - Comedian Lenny Bruce (pictured left with John Marshall, his attorney) was convicted by a Los Angeles Superior Court jury today on a charge of possession of heroin. Judge Benjamin Landis set June 4 for sentencing. Bruce said he will ask for a new trial. Bruce, 37, was arrested Oct. 5 at a hobby shop at 5211 Lankershim Blvd., along with Robert Coogan, 30, brother of actor Jackie Coogan, and one other man. Coogan pleaded guilty to a possession charge and was committed to the state’s program for rehabilitation of narcotic users.
