Communist Benjamin J. Davis Speaks at New York's City College

Dec. 21, 1961 - Benjamin J. Davis (pictured), a leader of the Communist party, was the center of violence at New York’s City College today after he gave a speech there. He was struck on the head by a sign but was not injured. College guards and students exchanged punches. One student shouted, “Sell your free speech to the widows in Hungary.” Others sang “God Bless America.” Many carried placards reading, “Commies Go Home,” “This Isn’t Academic Freedom — It’s Suicide” and “Free Speech — But Why Invite the Traitors!” Mr. Davis said the demonstration was “hoodlumism.” Some of the demonstrators were members of the Ukrainian and Hellenic Societies and the Young Republican Club on campus. Many of their parents, it was pointed out, had suffered under communism.
