Connally Takes Strong Lead in Texas Gubernatorial Primary

May 6, 1962 - John B. Connally Jr. (pictured last summer with President Kennedy), former Secretary of the Navy in the Kennedy Administration, took a commanding late last night in the Texas gubernatorial primary. An upset was in the making for second place in a run-off primary on June 2. Don Yarborough, a 36-year-old liberal Democrat, was building up a lead over Gov. Price Daniel, who was seeking his fourth two-year term. Partial returns gave Mr. Connally 170,272 votes to 115,557 for Mr. Yarborough, and 97,825 for Governor Daniel. Former Maj. Gen. Edwin A. Walker, a conservative, had 58,280 votes and was fifth in the field of six Democrats.
