Convicted Red Spy Headed Back to New York

June 30, 1962 - Dr. Robert Soblen (left), convicted wartime spy for the Soviet Union, was authoritatively reported to have been expelled from Israel and put on a plane for New York. Informed sources in Washington said the 62-year-old psychiatrist, who fled to Tel Aviv last Tuesday, had been ordered out of the country for illegal entry. Soblen, who is suffering from lymphatic leukemia, was arrested in Tel Aviv on Thursday, the day he was to have surrendered in New York to begin a life term. He was escorted by Israeli police on the El Al flight from Tel Aviv, which is due to arrive in New York tomorrow after stops at Athens and London.
