Sept. 28, 1962 - Joe Namath, a sophomore quarterback, sparked an awesome display of offensive power and led Alabama to a 44-6 victory over Tulane in a Southeastern Conference game in New Orleans today. The Crimson Tide unleashed a ferocious attack that carried them to five touchdowns before halftime. A rock-hard line smothered the Green Wave drives. Namath, a 19-year-old from Beaver Falls, Pa., passed for two touchdowns, set up another with his overhead tosses, and scored one himself. Although Coach Paul Bryant used him only sparingly, unofficial statistics showed Namath hit on 6 of 7 passes for 98 yards. It was Alabama’s 20th straight game without a defeat. Not since Tennessee downed The Tide, 20-7, at Knoxville on Oct. 15, 1960, has anyone beaten Alabama.
