Jan. 4, 1963 - The Dallas Cowboys have signed their No. 1 draft choice, All-America linebacker Lee Roy Jordan of Alabama, to an NFL contract. A spokesman said the signing was for “more than one year at an undisclosed price.” In his final game for the Crimson Tide, Jordan recorded 31 tackles in a 17–0 victory over Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl, attended by President Kennedy. For his performance, he received his second MVP award in a bowl game. Jordan received high praise from Alabama Coach Paul (Bear) Bryant, who stated, “He was one of the finest football players the world has ever seen. If runners stayed between the sidelines, he tackled them. He never had a bad day. He was 100% every day in practice and in the games.”
