July 13, 1963 - A Los Angeles woman who lost 143 pounds and a La Puenta man who took off 78 pounds reigned today in Long Beach, Calif., as Queen and King of the Fat People. Mrs. Alta M. Baker and Glendon Garner showed off their slimmed-down figures at a coronation luncheon ending the three-day convention of TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) at Los Angeles’ Breakers International Hotel. Mrs. Baker’s doctors had warned her “either to diet or die.” In a year, she dropped from 296 pounds to 153 pounds. Where she once wore a size 48 dress, she can now slip into a 14 and sometimes even a 12. Garner now weighs 201 pounds. His mother, Frances, was a runner-up in the queen contest last year. Four hundred men and women from throughout the nation attended the convention, an annual affair.
