May 26, 1962 - Sandy Koufax struck out 16 Philadelphia batters today and collected a run-scoring single in leading the Dodgers to a 6-3 victory over the Phillies. The triumph was the sixth in a row for Los Angeles. Going the distance for the second game in succession, Koufax limited the Phillies to five hits. His strikeout effort marked the third time this year he has fanned 10 or more batters in a game. Koufax now has struck out 10 or more batters in 34 different games during his career, including his two record performances of 18. His hit in the seventh helped the Dodgers break a 3-3 tie with two runs. Koufax’s dominant performance enabled the second-place Dodgers to remain a game and a half behind the first-place San Francisco Giants, who held their margin by beating the Mets today.
