Dodgers Lose Again, but Maury Sets Stolen Base Record

Sept. 7, 1962 - The Los Angeles Dodgers’ shortstop, Maury Wills (pictured), set a modern National League record of 82 stolen bases by pilfering 4 today, but Bill Mazeroski stole the show with a grand slam and 6 total runs batted in as the Pirates defeated the Dodgers, 10-1. This was the fourth loss for the league-leading Dodgers in their last five games. They made 5 errors, running their total to 12 in the last 3 games. Wills broke the modern league mark of 80 established by Bob Bescher of the Reds in 1911 in 159 games. This was Wills’ 142nd game. The modern major league record is 96, set by Ty Cobb of Detroit in 1915.
