Dodgers Top Cubs as Maury Steals Another

Sept. 14, 1962 - Maury Wills continued his assault on Ty Cobb’s record today with his 91st stolen base of the season as the Dodgers scored 7 times in the first inning and beat the Cubs, 13-7, in Chicago. Wills led off the game by drawing a walk and stealing second on the next pitch. The league-leading Dodgers had five hits, four walks, and a hit batsman in the inning and went on to win their sixth consecutive game. Wills, 5 stolen bases short of Cobb’s 1915 record, was caught stealing in the eighth. It was only the eleventh time he had been caught this season. Dick Bertell had to call for a pitchout to get him. Tommy Davis, battling for the National League batting championship, had 3 hits and raised his average to .341. Frank Howard led Los Angeles’ 13-hit attack with 3 singles and his 28th home run, driving in 4 runs. Duke Snider also hit a homer for the Dodgers, who now lead the Giants by three games.
