Eagles Score First Victory Over Browns, 35-7

Oct. 1, 1962 - The Philadelphia Eagles scored their first NFL victory of the season yesterday. They beat the Cleveland Browns, 35-7, on the passing of Sonny Jurgensen (pictured) and a defense that throttled the Browns’ vaunted running game. Although Jurgensen’s passes accounted for two touchdowns, it was the defense that stood out. Jimmy Brown, Cleveland’s explosive running star, was held to 38 yards in 12 carries. With the score tied in the second quarter, Jurgensen scored on a quarterback sneak from the 1 to give the Eagles a 14-7 halftime lead. Jurgensen could have sat in a rocking chair, so effective was his protection. He completed 18 of 24 passes for 265 yards.
