June 9, 1962 - Edward M. Kennedy (pictured with his wife Joan), 30-year-old brother of the President and candidate for the U.S. Senate, won the endorsement today of the Massachusetts Democratic convention. He immediately found himself entered in a statewide primary against Edward J. McCormack Jr. Said Mr. Kennedy: “The voice of the Democratic party has today been a free voice, a clear voice, and a true voice.” Mr. McCormack had a right to enter the primary, Mr. Kennedy continued, but he added confidently: “The greatest number of the hundreds of thousands of Democrats registered in this state will speak next September as you have spoken here tonight.” The Massachusetts Democratic primary will be held on Sept. 18.
