Dec. 28, 1961 - Elizabeth Taylor was named the movies’ top money-making star today in the 30th annual poll of exhibitors by The Motion Picture Herald. The honor came in a year during which she had almost died of pneumonia in a London hospital and then won her first Academy Award. Miss Taylor was only the fifth actress to be named tops at the box office. Males have usually been the big ticket-sellers. Others in the 1961 top ten are Rock Hudson, Doris Day, John Wayne, Cary Grant, Sandra Dee, Jerry Lewis, William Holden, Tony Curtis, and Elvis Presley. Mr. Presley, a newcomer to the list, bypassed an idol of an earlier day, Frank Sinatra, who is now twelfth.
