June 27, 1964 - Ernest Borgnine, a gruff and boisterous sailor on television’s “McHale’s Navy,” and Ethel Merman, a leather-lunged leading lady of musical comedy, said a pair of soft-spoken “I dos” today in Beverly Hills, Calif
The 47-year-old Borgnine and 55-year-old Miss Merman were wed in a quiet civil ceremony attended only by close relatives in the garden of Borgnine’s home.
Things got a little louder, however, when the new Mr and Mrs. Borgnine hosted 500 guests in a reception at Chasen’s shortly after the wedding.
Among those attending were Bob Hope, Milton Berle, Jack Klugman (right), Gypsy Rose Lee, and Jack Benny.
The newlyweds plan a three-week honeymoon in Japan, Hong Kong, and Honolulu before returning for film and T.V. chores.
The wedding was the fourth for Miss Merman and third for Borgnine, who recently divorced Mexican actress Katy Jurado.
