Ex-Nazi Gets Life Imprisonment for Mass Murder

June 22, 1962 - A West Berlin court has sentenced Dr. Albert Filbert, 56 years old, a former colonel in the Nazi S.S., to life imprisonment for the mass murder of Jews and Russians during World War II. The court found him guilty of the death of more than 10,000 persons shot in the area of Vilna and Grodno in the Western Soviet Union in 1941. Men, women, and children were herded together by Nazi guards under Filbert’s command and put to death in mass shootings, the verdict said. Four other former officers from the same unit were given terms at hard labor ranging from 3 to 10 years. A sixth man was acquitted for lack of evidence.
