First Lady Takes Off for 20-Day Tour

Mar. 9, 1962 - Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy left by commercial airliner tonight for a 20-day tour of India and Pakistan. The First Lady will spend the weekend in Rome, where she will have an audience with Pope John XXIII and will visit President Giovanni Gronchi. She and her party will then fly to Pakistan and India and will return home by way of London about March 26. Traveling with the President’s wife is her sister, Princess Lee Radziwill (right). The DC-8 jet, which left Idlewild Airport at 7:28 p.m., was scheduled to arrive in Rome, via Paris, at 11:10 a.m. Rome time.
