July 9, 1962 - Don Heinrich (pictured right with Don Meredith and Eddie LeBaron in 1960), a former All-American who helped lead the New York Giants to the NFL championship as their starting quarterback in 1956, was purchased by the Oakland Raiders today from the Dallas Cowboys. The price was not disclosed. Heinrich will replace Tom Flores as No. 1 quarterback for the American Football League club. Flores, passer for the Raiders in both of their seasons in the new league, was ordered into temporary retirement today after a physical check-up. He has a chronic lung infection but hopes to rejoin the team late in the season. Heinrich, under an agreement with the Cowboys, was backfield coach for the Giants last season, but as a player remained the property of the Dallas club. He played for the Giants from 1954 through 1959.
