Oct. 8, 1962 - The San Francisco Forty-Niners tore apart the Baltimore Colts yesterday and forced Johnny Unitas to the bench for the first time in his seven-year professional career as they achieved a 21-13 victory. The passing of John Brodie (pictured) and the running of J.D. Smith were too much for the Colts, and only three fumbles in the first half prevented the Forty-Niners from making the game a laugher. Unitas was lifted in the second period after completing only two of six passes for five yards. He came back in the last quarter and set up two touchdowns by Alex Hawkins, a 1-yard dive and a 3-yard run. The outcome left both teams with 2-2 records in the NFL’s Western Conference.
