Mar. 13, 1963 - Juan Marichal signed with the San Francisco Giants for an estimated $25,000 today. The National League champions’ last holdout had sought $30,000, an increase of $13,000. The right-handed pitcher reached the compromise with the Giants’ vice president, Chub Feeney, after two days of negotiations. Marichal, 25, won 18 games and lost 11 last season, when his earned run average was 3.32. In nearby Mesa, the Giants blended solo homers by Felipe Alou and Dan Markowski with an eighth-inning run that beat the Chicago Cubs, 3-2. Matty Alou’s double drove in the winning run. Baseball Commissioner Ford Frick and 3,421 fans saw the exhibition game.
