June 5, 1962 - A bobble on what could have been a triple play blossomed into a five-run San Francisco eighth inning today as the Giants romped to an 11-4 victory over the Cubs. Billy O’Dell (pictured), a left-hander, struck out 10 Cubs and scattered 5 hits. After Felipe Alou’s lead-off homer in the eighth, two Giants walked and then José Pagan lined a drive directly into the hands of the Cub shortstop, Andre Rodgers, who was only a few steps from second base. But Rodgers, who easily could have doubled both runners off their bases, dropped the ball. After that, doubles by Harvey Kuenn and Willie Mays and a single by Chuck Hiller rounded out the five-run spree by the Giants, who also had a four-run splurge in the third. The victory was the fifth straight for the National League leaders.
