Giants Thump Phillies, 9-2, as Mays Paces 17-Hit Attack

Aug. 6, 1962 - Willie Mays drove in 5 runs with 2 homers and 3 singles in a perfect afternoon at bat today as he paced a 17-hit San Francisco attack that crushed Philadelphia, 9-2. Mays opened with homer No. 33 in the first inning off the losing pitcher, Dallas Green. The major league home run leader followed with No. 34 in the second off Billy Smith. Each homer came with a man on base. Willie singled in the fourth, fifth, and eighth innings. The second one knocked in his 100th run of the year. Billy Pierce hurled his 10th victory for the Giants against 3 defeats.
