May 24, 1962 - Willie Mays hit a pair of home runs today as the San Francisco Giants scored a 7-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. The National League leaders ended a three-game losing streak. Given a rest on the bench last night, Mays returned to hit a bases-empty homer in the sixth on Cal McLish’s first pitch to him. He blasted his second homer, No. 13 for the season, with one aboard in the seventh. Orlando Cepeda crashed a homer in the sixth — his thirteenth — to share the league lead with Mays. In the seventh, Felipe Alou greeted a relief pitcher, Dallas Green, with a 400-foot homer over the right-center-field fence, scoring Cepeda ahead of him. A crowd of 6,538 in Candlestick Park saw the Giants’ power finally explode after they had lost six of their last eight games. They remain in first place with the Dodgers trailing by a game and a half.
