Feb. 21, 1962 - President Kennedy will turn his meeting with Lieut. Col. John H. Glenn Jr. at Cape Canaveral, Fla., on Friday into a family reunion for the astronaut. Mr. Kennedy will take Colonel Glenn’s wife and his two children, the colonel’s parents and Mrs. Glenn’s parents with him when he flies from Washington tomorrow in his jet plane. The party will land at Palm Beach, Fla., late in the afternoon. Another Air Force plane will be waiting to take the astronaut’s family about 100 miles up the Florida coast to Cape Canaveral. Vice President Johnson will fly to Grand Turk Island in the Bahamas to join Colonel Glenn. Colonel Glenn will arrive at Cape Canaveral Friday morning accompanied by the Vice President. At 10:30 a.m., President Kennedy will arrive at Cape Canaveral by plane from Palm Beach. He will present Colonel Glenn with the Distinguished Service Medal of NASA. Then the President and the astronaut will inspect Hangar S and Colonel Glenn’s Mercury space capsule, the Friendship 7. Mr. Kennedy will also make a few remarks at Hangar S, the headquarters of Project Mercury. The President will spend the weekend in Palm Beach and then bring Colonel Glenn back to Washington Monday morning in the Presidential plane.
