Goldwater’s Youngest Daughter Is Wed

June 27, 1964 - Senator Barry Goldwater limped down the aisle tonight as he gave his youngest daughter away in marriage.

The Senator had suffered an injury to a tendon in his left heel the day before yesterday when his daughter and her bridegroom playfully threw him into a swimming pool. Goldwater suffered his minor injury after he had playfully turned a garden hose on his daughter and her fiancé while they were sunbathing. The toss into the pool followed.

Goldwater’s daughter, 19-year-old Margaret Ann, was married to Richard Arlen Holt, 26, of Los Angeles at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Phoenix, Ariz.

A crowd of about 300 persons stood outside the cathedral in 92-degree heat to watch the couple and Goldwater, the leading candidate for the Republican Presidential nomination, come out.

Miss Goldwater graduated earlier this month from Mount Vernon Junior College in Washington. Mr. Holt works for the Gulf & Wilshire Oil Company in Los Angeles.

His best man was James Drury, who acts in the television Western, “The Virginian.”

The couple will make a wedding trip to Hawaii.

An aide to the Senator said a telephoned bomb threat weas received at the Trinity less than an hour before the wedding ceremony began. The threat led the police to search the cathedral thoroughly.

They found no bomb, but in some flowers near the altar they discovered a microphone. It had evidently been hidden there by a radio or television newsman. The microphone was removed.

Goldwater will hit the political trail again Monday when he appears before the New Jersey delegation to the Republican National Convention at Trenton. The next day, he will meet with the Illinois delegation and the Michigan delegation in those states.
