May 5, 1963 - Governor George Wallace of Alabama said today that most residents of Birmingham were “fed up” with racial demonstrations. He said that “things are going to be quieting down” in Birmingham and that “an overwhelming majority of the people there, both white and colored, are fed up with these demonstrations.” Governor Wallace is in Jackson, Mississippi for ceremonies marking the 100th anniversary of the Civil War battle of Port Gibson, Miss. He charged that the protest marches in Birmingham were instigated by “left wing groups.” He said the Kennedy Administration could “call a halt” to them if it desired because it had “catered to this group” in the past. He declared that he was satisfied with the national images of both Alabama and Mississippi, adding, “I don’t want these images to change.”
