Governor Rockefeller and Wife to Divorce

Nov. 17, 1961 - Governor and Mrs. Rockefeller (pictured) announced today that they had agreed on a separation in preparation for a divorce. This development could have important repercussions on the political future of Mr. Rockefeller, who has been mentioned as a possible Republican candidate for the Presidency in 1964. It was understood that the divorce suit would be instituted by Mrs. Rockefeller outside New York State, which recognizes only adultery as a ground for divorce. The Governor, 53, and Mrs. Rockefeller, 54, have been married for 31 years. The Rockefellers have five grown children, all but one of whom are married. They have eight grandchildren. A spokesman for the family said the separation arrangement between the couple had been reached on an “amicable” basis.
