Havana Distorts News of President Kennedy's Venezuela Visit

Dec. 16, 1961 - President Kennedy’s visit in Venezuela was reported today by Havana radio in details almost totally at odds with the news coming directly out of Caracas. The Cuban broadcast said President Kennedy was received “in the midst of the most profound rebuke ever to be manifested by the people of Venezuela.” The broadcast stated that two bombs went off in Caracas’ San Bernardino suburb shortly after President Kennedy arrived in the Venezuelan capital. It said also that Mr. Kennedy avoided “popular contact.” The news reports from Caracas said there were no incidents or arrests, that President and Mrs. Kennedy got a warm welcome, and the only “hostility” came from the weather which interfered with helicopter traffic. In addition, President Kennedy visited two housing developments and agrarian reform centers.
