Mar. 2, 1963 - Turning in his most brilliant performance of an imposing rookie career, ex-Ohio State star John Havlicek sparked the Boston Celtics to a hard-earned 122-117 verdict over the New York Knicks at Boston Garden tonight. By virtue of the win, the Celtics clinched their seventh consecutive Eastern Division title. Havlicek not only reached a pro high for him, 32 points, but proved he is the leading candidate for Rookie of the Year honors. Havlicek came on strong with the Celtics down 26-15 midway through the first period, and his ball-stealing provided the impetus to keep Boston in contention. He scored 12 points in the second period and continue his ball-hawking and all-around defensive efforts that threw the Knicks’ offense out of kilter for the rest of the game.
